India is home to a wonderful collection of spas and yoga retreats. They are spread all over the subcontinent — in the hills, on the beach, in cities and they vary in style, comfort and price. Some offer traditional spa therapies and others offer Ayurvedic treatments. Ayurveda is a Vedic science and is also known as 'the Science of Life'.
Ananda in the Himalayas is India's first and only destination spa hotel, in the Himalayan foothills, close to the holy town of Rishikesh. Ranked in the Top 10 spa hotels of the world, this wonderful resort offers peaceful solitude whilst surrounded by luxury. The 21,000 sq ft spa and facilities here are sublime, having 20 treatment rooms for just 75 bedrooms. They excel at Ayurvedic treatments, Thai and Swedish massages, aromatherapy and hydro-therapy, to name a few. The heated swimming pool is also a perfect place to relax at in a climate that is ideal almost year round. Ananda is accessed by train from Delhi to Haridwar followed by a 1 hour drive. It is also reached by road from Delhi (6-7 hours).
THE OBEROI VILAS
The Oberoi Vilas properties are a collection of incredibly luxurious hotels dotted around Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. They are the latest brand of hotels to emerge from the Oberoi Group of hotels. The Banyan tree group runs and manages most of the Oberoi spas. The Oberoi Amarvilas, The Oberoi Rajvilas, The Oberoi Vanyavilas, The Oberoi Udaivilas, The Oberoi Cecil and The Oberoi Wildflower Hall all now have small but exquisite spas on the property.
Around Rajasthan and Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu there are several other charming hotels which have small spas attached. They offer either traditional or Ayurvedic treatments. Amongst the many around, we suggest: Devi Garh Neemrana Fort-Palace, just 2 hours south of Delhi; Surya Samudra, Kovalam and Shalimar Spice Garden, close to Thekkady. For those interested in a yoga retreat in Kerala, Paradisa lies just 3 hours from Cochin, towards Thekkady, and offers excellent yoga and meditation classes as well as having superb views of the Western Ghats from its ridgetop position.
THE TAJ RESIDENCY
The Taj Residency lies a short way up the Malabar Coast at Calicut, and boasts an excellent Ayurvedic centre. It excels at this age-old system of herbal healing, yoga and meditation. Since the Ayurvedic science believes that the human body operates in cycles that occur in multiples of 7, most of the programmes offered here are designed over a period of seven days and can stretch to 35 days. However, arrangements for shorter programmes can be made. The hotel itself is modern, clean and comfortable and is based in town, with views over the sea, thus the sea air helps ensure the success of your treatments. Calicut is reached by air from Mumbai and Goa (sporadic timetable). It is also accessed by road from Wynad, Ooty, Cochin and Tellicherry.
Somatheeram Ayurvedic Beach Resort lies in India's southernmost reaches, on the Malabar Coast, close to Trivandrum. A beachside retreat, it sits on a narrow headland amidst 15 acres of tropical greenery and overlooks a superb stretch of beach. It is now world famous for this unique Indian system of medicine with a highly trained team of doctors. There is also an exceptional yoga centre. Accommodation is simple, traditional, Malayali (Keralan) cottages and houses. Trivandrum is accessed by air from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin, Male (Maldives) and Colombo (Sri Lanka). It can also be reached by road from Cochin and 'the backwaters'.
